Single-photon source devices are indispensable for the realization of quantum communication devices, and are the key elements for the realization of the quantum communication era. The realization of highly reliable single-photon source devices will make it possible to realize communications that cannot be eavesdropped on, and will greatly contribute to a more secure and advanced information society. However, single-photon source devices until now have faced significant challenges in controlling the number of photons contained in each pulse and identifying the time of photon generation.
In this research, we have shown that a single-photon source device can be realized with higher efficiency than conventional methods by using a nonlinear optical crystal with a superlattice structure. Using this device, the number of photons per pulse can be better controlled, and the time of photon generation can be specified.
This research result will contribute to the realization of a more secure and advanced information society.
